Monoethanolamine(MEA) is an organic compound and amino alcohol used primarily in variousindustrial applications, including as a chemical intermediate and in theproduction of surfactants, detergents, and personal care products. It is acolorless, viscous liquid with an ammonia-like odor. MEA is produced by thereaction of ammonia with ethylene oxide.

The primaryapplication of Monoethanolamine is as a feedstock in the production ofdetergents and surfactants, where it serves as a key ingredient in formulationsfor liquid soaps, shampoos, and cleaning agents. MEA acts as a foaming agentand emulsifier, aiding in the removal of oils and dirt from surfaces.

In additionto its role in detergents, Monoethanolamine is used as a chemical intermediatein the synthesis of various compounds, including herbicides, pharmaceuticals,and corrosion inhibitors. It is employed in gas treatment processes to removecarbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from natural gas and refinerystreams.
