Sodium methoxide is a chemical compoundthat exists as a white to yellowish powder or as a solution in methanol orethanol. It is primarily used as a strong base and as a catalyst in variousorganic synthesis reactions. Sodium methoxide is produced by the reaction ofsodium metal with methanol under controlled conditions. It finds applicationsin the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and specialty chemicals.Sodium methoxide is particularly valuable in the production of biodiesel, whereit serves as a catalyst for the transesterification of triglycerides withmethanol to produce fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) and glycerol.Additionally, it is used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, suchas vitamin A and vitamin E derivatives.
